What Is WHOIS
Every registered domain has a public record called WHOIS. Anyone in the world can look up a domain and see details about it. Registries require registrars, including Tech Guru IT Solutions, to collect accurate contact details when you register a domain through our Store, and parts of that data can appear in the public record.
What Shows Publicly
- Always visible: the domain name, registration date, expiry date, registrar name, nameservers, and domain status codes.
- Sometimes visible: registrant name, organisation, email, phone and address. Whether these appear depends on the domain extension and whether ID Protection is active.
- Never visible: your client area password, billing history, and payment details. These are never part of WHOIS.
What ID Protection Does
ID Protection, also called WHOIS privacy, replaces your personal contact details in the public record with the details of a privacy service. Emails sent to the privacy address are forwarded to you, so official notices still reach you. Marketers and spammers who harvest WHOIS data get nothing useful.
Why It Matters for Indian SMBs
After a domain is registered with visible details, owners commonly receive fake renewal invoices, SEO spam calls, and phishing emails pretending to be the registry. ID Protection blocks most of this at the source. It costs little and we recommend it for every eligible domain.
Important Notes
- Some extensions do not permit privacy. Certain country code domains publish limited data by policy, and the option will not appear at checkout for them.
- Keep your real details accurate in the client area even with privacy enabled. Registrars must hold correct data, and false information can lead to suspension.
- You can enable or disable ID Protection any time from the domain management page at app.techguru.co.in.
