Google Analytics 4 — Quick Setup and What to Track Print

  • 0

If you cannot measure your website, you cannot improve it. Google Analytics 4, usually called GA4, is free and tells you where visitors come from, what they do and where they drop off. Setup takes about 20 minutes on a site built with our Website Builder.

Quick setup

  1. Create a free account at analytics.google.com and add a property for your website.
  2. Copy the Measurement ID, which looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX.
  3. In the Website Builder, open Site Settings, find the Analytics or Custom Code section, and paste the ID or the tag snippet into the header area.
  4. Publish the site, then use the Realtime report in GA4 to confirm your own visit appears.
  5. In GA4 Admin, switch on Enhanced Measurement so scrolls, outbound clicks and file downloads are tracked automatically.

The five numbers an SMB should watch

  • Users by channel: how many visitors arrive from organic search, social, direct and paid ads each month.
  • Engaged sessions: visits that lasted more than 10 seconds or viewed multiple pages. This filters out accidental clicks.
  • Top landing pages: which pages bring people in. These deserve your best offers and clearest calls to action.
  • Key events: mark form submissions, WhatsApp clicks and phone number clicks as key events so GA4 counts enquiries, not just traffic.
  • City report: confirm your visitors match the cities you actually serve.

A simple monthly routine

On the first working day of each month, note the five numbers above in a spreadsheet. Trends over three months matter far more than any single day. If enquiries fall while traffic holds, the problem is on the page, not the marketing.
