Catch-All Addresses - Pros, Cons and Setup Print

What Is a Catch-All

A catch-all, called the Default Address in cPanel, receives every message sent to your domain at an address that does not exist. If someone writes to acounts@yourdomain.in with a spelling mistake, a catch-all still receives it instead of the sender getting a bounce.

Advantages

  • No lost enquiries: customers who mistype an address still reach you, which matters for sales leads.
  • Instant ad hoc addresses: you can give out tender2026@yourdomain.in for a specific project without creating anything, and mail arrives in the catch-all.
  • Migration safety net: during a move, forgotten addresses do not silently bounce.

Disadvantages

  • Spam magnet: spammers send to random names at every domain. A catch-all accepts all of it, and volume grows over time.
  • Storage pressure: the collecting mailbox can fill quickly, and a full mailbox may disrupt delivery for real addresses that forward there.
  • Harder monitoring: important mail can drown in junk, so someone must actually review the folder.

How to Enable It

  1. Log in to cPanel from your client portal at app.techguru.co.in.
  2. Open Default Address under the Email section.
  3. Select your domain, choose Forward to Email Address, and enter a dedicated mailbox such as catchall@yourdomain.in.
  4. Click Change to save.

Recommended Practice

Do not point the catch-all at your main personal inbox. Use a separate mailbox with a modest quota, review it twice a week, and move genuine mail out. Set a filter that deletes obvious junk patterns. If spam volume becomes heavy, switch the default address back to the discard option, which silently drops unknown mail, or set it to bounce with an error so senders learn the correct address. Review the decision every few months as your spam load changes.
