The Problem No Spec Sheet Mentions
Clients often ask why their expensive conferencing system still sounds hollow and tiring. The answer is usually not the equipment — it is the room. Glass walls, bare gypsum ceilings and tiled floors are standard in modern Indian offices, and all three reflect sound. Understanding a little acoustics explains a lot of meeting frustration.
What Goes Wrong
- Reverberation. Hard surfaces bounce speech around the room. Microphones pick up the direct voice plus dozens of reflections, and remote listeners hear a voice in a well. Echo cancellation software helps but cannot fully rescue a highly reflective room.
- Echo between parallel glass walls, which creates a distinctive flutter that microphones amplify.
- Noise intrusion. Air conditioning rumble, corridor chatter and traffic leak into microphones and force everyone to strain.
Fixes That Do Not Require Demolition
- Add absorption. Fabric wrapped acoustic panels on one or two walls, acoustic ceiling tiles or clouds, and thick carpet or rugs make the largest audible difference. Treating even 20 to 30 percent of hard surface area transforms most meeting rooms.
- Break up parallel surfaces. Bookshelves, upholstered furniture and wall art diffuse reflections at near zero cost.
- Quieten the background. Softer AC diffusers, door seals and locating rooms away from pantries all lower the noise floor.
- Choose microphones for the room. In reflective rooms, microphones closer to talkers — table units rather than a single distant bar — capture more voice and less room.
Design It In When You Can
