IP Cameras vs Analog HD — Which Should You Install Print

  • 0

The Two Technologies in Plain Terms

Every CCTV proposal you receive will be built on one of two technologies. Analog HD cameras send video over coaxial cable to a DVR, which digitises and records it. IP cameras digitise video inside the camera and send it over standard network cable to an NVR. Both produce good high definition images today, so the decision rests on cabling, scale and features rather than picture quality alone.

Where Analog HD Makes Sense

  • Upgrading an old system. If your premises already has coaxial cable from an earlier installation, modern analog HD cameras can reuse it, saving significant civil and cabling cost.
  • Small, simple sites. A shop or small office with four to eight cameras and one viewing point rarely needs the extra capability of IP.
  • Tight budgets. Camera for camera, analog HD is usually cheaper in the entry segment.

Where IP Cameras Win

  • Image detail. IP cameras scale to 4 MP, 8 MP and beyond, useful for reading faces and number plates.
  • Single cable simplicity. Power over Ethernet carries both power and video on one network cable up to 90 metres, and further with extenders.
  • Smart analytics. Line crossing, intrusion zones, people counting and vehicle detection run inside modern IP cameras, cutting false alerts dramatically.
  • Scale and multi-site. Adding cameras is a network exercise, and head office can view branch sites centrally.
  • Integration. IP systems tie neatly into access control, alarms and video management software.

Our Honest Recommendation

For new installations in offices, warehouses and factories across Delhi NCR, we generally recommend IP. The incremental cost over analog has narrowed, and the system stays useful for longer. For small retail sites or where good coaxial cabling already exists, analog HD remains a sensible, economical choice.
