The Problem: Public WHOIS Data
When you register a domain, ICANN and registry rules require you to supply a registrant name, address, email and phone number. Historically this information was published in the public WHOIS directory, where spammers, telemarketers and scammers harvested it within hours of registration. Many Indian domain owners report a flood of fake renewal notices, SEO spam calls and phishing emails soon after registering without protection.
What Domain Privacy Does
Domain privacy, also called ID protection, replaces your personal contact details in public lookups with the details of a privacy service. Anyone who genuinely needs to reach you, such as a buyer interested in your domain, can still do so through a forwarding email address, but your real identity stays hidden.

- Fewer scams: fake renewal invoices are usually targeted using WHOIS data.
- Personal safety: home addresses of individual founders and bloggers stay private.
- Competitive privacy: rivals cannot easily map every domain your business registers before a launch.
When Privacy May Not Apply
Some country code TLDs restrict privacy services under registry policy. Certain .in registrant data is already redacted in public output under current NIXI practice, but adding ID protection where available gives an extra layer. Note that privacy does not protect you from legal process; courts and law enforcement can still obtain registrant details through proper channels.
How to Enable It
- Log in at app.techguru.co.in and open the domain list.
- Select the domain and look for the ID protection or addon option.
- Enable it and pay any small annual fee shown in INR.
- Verify with a WHOIS lookup that your details are now masked.
Keep your real contact details accurate in the portal itself, since registrars must be able to reach you for verification.
